    Product Care

    BEFORE USING THE GROOVE
Give your Fresh™ Filter a quick 15-second rinse the first time you use it to dislodge any harmless, loose particles of carbon, then set it aside, as no additional cleaning is recommended.
If you accidentally run your filter through the dishwasher, discard and replace it with a new filter.

    BEFORE CLEANING THE GROOVE
Remove the carbon filter as it is not dishwasher safe.

    CLEANING THE GROOVE
The bottle, bite valve, straw and lid can be cleaned in the top rack of the dishwasher or by hand with warm, soapy water. Pull off the bite valve and straw from the cap. If you like to use a bottle brush, we don’t recommend forcing a brush through the Bite Valve slit. If you have the brush kit, run the small brush through the straw.
For a deeper cleaning, add a drop of mild soap or tablespoon of bleach to a clean glass jar filled with water. Drop the bite valve, straw and cap into the solution, and tightly close the jar’s lid. Shake the mixture around for 30 seconds, and then let the parts soak for about 15 minutes. Rinse and shake dry.

    To re-assemble the lid :
Flip the stem collar (the component the bite valve attached to originally) to the open position. Orient the bite valve so the finger tab points towards the front of the cap. Push the bite valve firmly onto the stem collar.
Press the straw back into place on the bottom of the lid. Ensure the straw covers the notches completely.

    FAQs

    FAQ

Why Stainless Steel and not Aluminum?

When CamelBak® designs a product, we look for the best materials to ensure taste-free hydration. We chose stainless steel rather than aluminum because it is stronger, harder and more scratch-resistant, making a more durable long-lasting bottle for all your adventures. Unlike aluminum, which requires an inner coating or lining to protect the metal, stainless steel is coating-free.

What’s the clear thing on top of the cap? Do I remove it or cut it to drink?
The CamelBak® Bite™ Valve is a patented feature that provides easy drinking and spill-proof safety. Do NOT remove or cut this piece to drink. Simply bite it slightly and sip as you would out of a straw.

Is it hard to drink from the CamelBak® Groove®
    ?
No. Drinking water from CamelBak® Groove® is easy and fast. CamelBak® Groove® employs Bite Valve technology - simply bite it slightly and sip as you would out of a straw. A recent study by Pepperdine University revealed that people who drink from CamelBak Bottles drink up to 24% more water than people who drink from other reusable bottles or plastic disposable bottles. So CamelBak® Groove® is so easy to drink from that it can help you be better hydrated.

Can I put hot water in my CamelBak® Groove®?
Yes. Hot water, NOT boiling water (maximum temperature: 100 degrees Fahrenheit), can be used in the CamelBak® Groove®. However, please be aware that the experience will be similar to drinking hot liquid through a straw, so use caution when doing so.

Can I put ice in my CamelBak® Groove®?
Yes. Feel free to fill the bottle with ice, but be sure to leave enough room in the bottle for the filter housing and tube assembly when the cap is replaced.

What will happen if I put Elixir, sports drink or juice in the CamelBak® Groove®?
The CamelBak® Groove® is designed and intended for use with water only. The filter may remove the flavor from these types of beverages, leaving you with unsavory water.

    Can a child use the CamelBak® Groove®?
Children age 5 and under should not use the CamelBak® Groove®. The Bite Valve could become dislodged and pose a choking risk.

    How do I clean the CamelBak® Groove®?
Note : Remove the Groove® Fresh™ filter before washing!

The CamelBak® Groove® Tritan Bottle (and cap assembly) is dishwasher-safe and easy to clean. For best results, always use the top rack of the dishwasher and avoid high-heat settings like “sanitary clean” or “heat boost” which may distort plastic components.

The Groove® stainless steel bottle can be easily cleaned by hand with a bottle brush using warm water and mild soap.

The Groove® Insulated can be easily cleaned with a bottle brush using warm water and mild soap. The straw, bite valve and cap are dishwasher-safe. Simply remove the straw and bite valve from the cap and place in the top rack for washing, or hand-wash in warm water and mild soap.

To clean the cap, we recommend removing the straw and Bite Valve from the cap to better clean the inside passages of the cap. Hand wash with warm water and mild soap, or place the cap components on the top rack of your dishwasher.

    What is BPA?
Bisphenol-A is an ingredient used to make polycarbonate. All CamelBak® bottles, including the CamelBak® Groove®, are BPA-Free, durable, portable, dishwasher-safe and have no residual taste – all of the features and qualities you’ve come to expect from reusable CamelBak® water bottles.

    What are Phthalates (pronounced Thal-ates)?
Phthalates are a component added to some plastics to make them soft and pliable. CamelBak® bottles are not made with any of the phthalates that are of high concern.

What are the bottle and cap made from?
All CamelBak® bottles are constructed with materials carefully selected for their safety, durability, and ease of use. All materials are BPA-free, and safe for use in a hydration bottle. The CamelBak® Groove® is made from either Tritan or Stainless Steel. CamelBak does not use materials that contain harmful phthalates.

Tritan is a copolyester polymer made by the Eastman Company. Tritan makes CamelBak® Groove® vibrant, clear, durable, dishwasher-safe and 100% BPA-free and free of harmful phthalates.

The Stainless Steel versions of CamelBak® Groove® are made from 18-8 stainless steel, which is naturally stain-resistant, corrosion-resistant and taste-free. Unlike aluminum, stainless steel requires no liners or inner coatings, so CamelBak® Groove® is 100% BPA-free and free of harmful phthalates.

The CamelBak® Groove® cap is an assembly of plastic materials made primarily from food-grade polypropylene selected for exceptional durability and safety. The Bite Valve is constructed with high grade silicone for life long, taste free performance; the straw is made from polyethylene, the same material used in milk bottles.

    Can I use CamelBak® Groove® when I’m travelling abroad?
Only use the CamelBak® Groove® with potable tap water. The Fresh™ Filter contained in your CamelBak® Groove® does not remove harmful microscopic pathogens that may be contained in tap water outside of the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

Can I use CamelBak® Groove® when I’m hiking in the back country?
Only use the CamelBak® Groove® with potable tap water. The Fresh™ Filter contained in your CamelBak® Groove® is not a purifier and not certified to be effective against bacteria, cysts or viruses.

Can I use the CamelBak® Groove® in high-altitude/ low-pressure environments? (i.e. airplanes, mountain altitudes, etc)
Yes, but with extra care. Always keep the bottle right side up and the bite valve in the closed position. Remove the straw for additional protection. Expect a bit of "spurt" during the first sip.

Is the CamelBak® Groove® microwave safe?
Feel free to use the CamelBak Groove® to warm up liquids (i.e., up to a minute). Do NOT microwave with the cap (or straw or filter) in place as it contains metal screws that are not microwave safe.

What are the maximum temperatures (freezing / boiling) that the CamelBak® Groove® can withstand?
The CamelBak® Groove® can withstand being filled with water ranging in temperature from 34 - 100 degrees Fahrenheit. We do NOT recommend freezing water inside the bottle or boiling it. Extremely hot fluids can damage your CamelBak® Groove®.

Is the CamelBak® Groove® dishwasher safe?
Note: Remove the Groove® Fresh™ filter before washing!

To clean the cap, we recommend removing the straw and Bite Valve from the cap to better clean the inside passages of the cap. Hand wash with warm water and mild soap, or place the cap components on the top rack of your dishwasher.

What if I accidentally washed my Fresh™ Filter in the dishwasher?
If you accidentally wash your Fresh™ Filter in the dishwasher, we recommend that you discard it and place a new Fresh™ Filter in your bottle.

Do I need to clean the bottle before first use?
First, we recommend that you disassemble all CamelBak® Groove® components and wash them with warm water and soap. All components of the CamelBak® Groove® in Tritan are dishwasher safe, excluding the carbon filter. The Groove in stainless steel bottle should be hand-washed in warm water and mild soap. The cap and its components may be hand-washed or placed in the top rack of a dishwasher.

Next, remove the Fresh™ Filter from its wrapper and rinse it thoroughly, inside and out, under running tap water for 15 seconds. Rinsing the filter removes any loose particles of carbon and ensures optimum performance. Note that, when the filter is new, you may experience trapped air bubbles or small particles of carbon during the first few sips. These are harmless. Rinsing the filter as described should minimize their occurrence.

Can I remove the CamelBak® Big Bite™ Valve for cleaning?
Yes. The Bite Valve and straw can be removed for easy cleaning. Follow these simple instructions:

Flip the stem to the open position by pulling on the stem tab.
Grab the flat finger tab on the base of the Bite Valve under the cap.
In one firm motion, pull the Bite Valve component out of the cap.
Clean the Bite Valve and cap by hand or in the top rack of a dishwasher.

How do I put the bite valve back on the cap?
Follow these instructions to re-insert the Bite Valve component:

Flip the stem collar (the component the bite valve attached to originally) to the open position.
Turn the cap over and orient the bite valve so the finger tab points towards the back of the cap (where the handle loop is).
Push the bite valve firmly onto the stem collar.

Can I use a bottle brush on the Bite Valve?
Yes. The Bite Valve is made from tough silicone material that can be cleaned with a bottle brush similar to those designed for baby bottle nipples. Make sure the brush doesn’t have exposed metal edges that could cut the silicone. Then insert the brush into the open end at the base of the valve. We don’t recommend forcing a brush of any kind through the Bite Valve slit (where you drink from) as this could damage the sealing surfaces of the Bite Valve.

What is NSF and why does CamelBak® Groove® have the NSF logo on the packaging?
NSF is an internationally recognized, independent testing agency. NSF certifies the performance and safety of water-related products by validating reduction claims and auditing the manufacturing process and the materials used. CamelBak® sought NSF Certification because NSF is the leading authority to validate reduction claims.

The NSF logo on a product confirms that NSF has assessed and certified the product’s conformity with relevant NSF / ANSI standards. In order to earn the right to use the NSF mark, CamelBak® met stringent evaluations and continues to allows NSF to conduct periodic unannounced testing and inspections of our facilities to ensure ongoing compliance.

What does my CamelBak® Groove® Portable Filtration System reduce?
The CamelBak® Groove® is certified to reduce Chlorine, Taste and Odor. Chlorine is the leading cause of foul smelling and tasting water. When changed as directed, the Fresh™ Filter reduces more than 90% of Chlorine, far surpassing the NSF reduction requirement.

Why can’t I find the NSF logo on my packaging?
Some Groove® systems were packaged before we had been awarded NSF Certification. They were produced to the same high standards that our NSF Certified systems were, but we could not put the logo on the packaging until after all of the testing had been completed.

How often should I replace the Fresh™ Filter?
Each Fresh™ Filter reliably reduces chlorine, taste and odor for 300 refills of the bottle, or approximately 3 months of use at 3 – 4 full bottles per day (48 gallons / 180 liters). Note: You may need to change the filter more or less often depending on the amount of water you consume.

How do I change the filter?
Unscrew the cap from the bottle.
Unscrew the filter housing and tube assembly 1/8th turn to remove from the cap.
Hold the Fresh™ Filter by the white collar and pull it out of the filter housing.
Remove a new Fresh™ Filter from its wrapper and rinse thoroughly, inside and out, under running tap water for 15 seconds.
Hold the new Fresh™ Filter by the white collar and slide it into the open end of the filter housing. Note: The white collar will remain visible above the end of the filter housing when fully inserted.
Insert the filter housing and tube assembly into the cap and rotate it 1/8th turn. Note: You should feel gentle resistance as the new filter engages the seal in the cap.
Why do I need to rinse a new Fresh™ Filter under running tap water before using it?
Rinsing the Fresh™ Filter removes any loose particles of carbon and ensures optimum performance. When the filter is new, you may experience trapped air bubbles or small particles of carbon in the first few sips. These are harmless. Rinsing the filter should minimize their occurrence.

How do I dispose of used filters?
Fresh™ Filters can be disposed of in household trash. The Fresh™ Filter is non-toxic and made with renewable plant-based materials. The Fresh™ Filter is not meant to be placed in curbside recycling or compost. Note that the filter is made from a sustainable, plant-based source and weighs only 0.2 oz, so the waste is minimized.

What is my Fresh™ Filter made from?
All water filters are made from carbon. We use coconut to make the carbon used in the Fresh™ Filter. By contrast, some competitors use coal to make their carbon. The coconut used to make the Fresh™ Filter does not impart any flavor into your filtered water.

Can my CamelBak® Groove® be used without the Fresh™ Filter?
Yes. The CamelBak® Groove™ can be used without the Fresh™ Filter. However, without the Fresh™ Filter, it will not filter your water.

What happens if I do not change my filter regularly, as suggested?
The filter absorbs contaminants from the water. Over time, it becomes saturated and is able to absorb fewer contaminants. If used past the effective life (an average of 3 months of use at 3 – 4 full bottles per day), the filter will remove contaminants less effectively and will flow more slowly. Changing the filter regularly ensures that you have clear, refreshing, great-tasting water.

Since the filter is wet all the time, should I be worried about bacteria growing in it?
No. The filter contains an antimicrobial agent to prevent microbial growth. Change the filter regularly, as directed.

Is the CamelBak® Groove® BPA free?
    Yes, the CamelBak® Groove® is BPA-free.

Are Tritan™ and Stainless safe? What type of safety testing has been done on Tritan™ and Stainless?
CamelBak®, in conjunction with rigorous 3rd party testing, has not found evidence of any harmful chemicals leaching into food/beverage surfaces from Tritan™ or stainless material. Recent testing showed that Tritan™ is safe and meets all FDA and EPA guidelines for material that comes in repeated contact with food.

Can the Fresh™ Filter be recycled?
No, the Fresh™ Filter is not meant to be placed in curbside recycling or compost. Fresh™ Filters can be disposed of in household trash. The Fresh™ Filter is non-toxic and made with renewable, plant-based materials and weighs only 0.2 oz, so the waste is minimized.
