The Traverse series is our most versatile bag, designed for a broad range of activities in a variety of environments, filled with 850+ Loft European Goose Down protected by our patent pending 3D NanoShell™.



Designed with a relaxed mummy shape, the Traverse series offers comfort in the widest range of temperatures. With the ability to be opened out into a full duvet when sleeping in huts and zippered up for winter camping in sub zero conditions the Traverse series can be used all year round.


The oversized neck-collar and hood-seal, keep drafts out, minimising heat loss around the face. The oversized zipper draft tube is fitted with the lightest and stiffest anti-snag material, for smooth operation. A security pocket located inside the bag is easily accessible, ideal for stowing electronics to preserve battery performance in extreme cold. Using a side block baffle construction to maintain a 60/40 fill ratio more down is located in the top of the bag for maximum insulation. The soft touch lining fabric is down proof by construction and highly breathable offering a comfortable sleep.


Relaxed Mummy Convertible


The Traverse relaxed mummy shape is cut with a larger hood, broader shoulders and large chest to provide a more comfortable sleeping bag while maintaining thermally efficiency. The addition of a full length side and foot zip allow for conversion from a traditional winter mummy shaped bag to a duvet offering the greatest versatility in a cold weather sleeping bag.

Anatomically Tapered Box Foot
The natural position your feet will take when lying flat is relaxed at ease and slightly stretched out. The anatomical cut box foot tapers in three directions. There is vertical taper from the toe to the heal creating a slant that matches the relaxed form of your feet. Along the outer edge of your foot there is a trapezoidal taper that provides a form fit, keeping down close to your extremities so they don’t get frostbite. From the top view, there is an outward taper from the ankles to the feet. This creates room for your toes to have great circulation and traps warmth in the foot box.

Hood Design
The Traverse series uses 3D compound differential cut patterning, this forms a shape that naturally traps warmth were it is most essential.

Internal Drawcords
Around the perimeter of the hood an internally constructed drawcord tunnel ensures the cord is buried deep within the down. When drawn closed the hood forms a comfortable seal around your face. A low profile Nifco dual cord adjuster is used for comfort and durability, offering a versatile fit. The hood closure uses a non-stretch cord for refined adjustment, while the neck collar uses an elastic cord to stretch with you as you move in the bag.

Zips
All Sea to Summit sleeping bags use YKK zips. The Traverse series uses YKK #5 reverse zips, this allows you to un-zip the sleeping bag from top and bottom for temperature regulation. Alpine, Traverse and Trek bags are fitted with a fixed zip length for all sizes. These bags can be zippered together in any combination of model and size.

Anti-Snag Zip System
Neatly hidden in the draft tube is a super high-density 210D poly cloth. This fabric is exceptionally stiff and was originally engineered for use in high performance race sails. The lightweight, durable, stiff finish provides an excellent zipper anti-snag.

Security Pocket
A large security pocket is located inside the chest area, it can fit a passport and wallet or be used to stow your electronic devices. Anti-snag coupled with a YKK Invisible Zip ensures an ultra low profile for comfort against the skin.

Fabrics, Filling & Care

The 3D NanoShell™ Technology:
To achieve maximum loft and insulation, down must be dry and uncompressed. Traditionally down sleeping bags have used coated fabrics to create a water resistant shell protecting the down. The problem with this approach is condensation; vapour leaving your body passes through the down, migrating to the shell. While breathable fabrics are generally effective in allowing vapour to pass through a bag, they do not prevent condensation at the dew point on the inside of the shell where down can absorb moisture.

Over several days of packing and unpacking a sleeping bag, wet down mixes with dry down ruining its ability to loft. By the end of a long trip it is not uncommon for a sleeping bag to have decreased in warmth significantly because the down is damp, reducing its loft and therefore unable to insulate properly.
Sea to Summit has solved this problem with our 3D NanoShell. The two components of the 3D NanoShell are the NanoShell Face and the 3D Barrier.

The NanoShell™ Face Fabric:
The NanoShell Face is used on both the 2D NanoShell and 3D NanoShell systems. This face fabric is a high-density weave, 20 denier polyester ripstop with a Nano DWR finish. The Nano DWR is a surface treatment that makes the fabric extremely water repellent, without compromising breathability. Nano DWR is much more durable than standard DWR as it uses nano sized particles of water repellent to treat the fabric. These very small particles can attach to the fabric fibres in much greater quantity and adhere better, therefore lasting longer.

In a world of technical brilliance it is remarkable that the performance of certain natural products have not been surpassed. Despite advances in modern fibre technology, down is still the best insulator warmth for weight, and is also the most durable sleeping bag insulation.

The problem with down is its vulnerability to water; moisture decreases the ability of the down to loft to its full potential and insulate, decreasing the warmth of your sleeping bag. Once down is damp or wet, it also takes a long time for it to dry out and effectively insulate again.

ULTRA-DRY Down™ is a permanent* Nano-level water repellent polymer treatment applied to our high loft, high quality down. The Nano-thin treatment vastly improves our down’s reaction to water without effecting its weight or loft performance. ULTRA-DRY Down™ retains over 60% more loft and absorbs 30% less moisture when compared with untreated down. Sea to Summit sleeping bags dry out 60% faster than bags with untreated down.

The Nano-level treatment also inhibits bacterial and microbial growth, which makes Sea to Summit sleeping bags more hygienic and improves their lifespan.

Loft
Loft is the volume for a given weight of down. It is used to describe the quality of down, relating directly to the insulating performance. High loft down is warmer for a given weight than low loft down. Higher lofting down will fill a larger volume of space for a given weight. As a result, less down weight is required to fill each baffle in a sleeping bag. This translates to a lighter sleeping bag. The most common measure of loft is called Fill Power. 850 Fill Power implies that one ounce of this down will loft to fill a volume of 850in3.

850+ Loft Goose Down
850+ Fill Power (Loft) Goose Down is the very best quality down available for sleeping bags. It provides the highest insulation for its weight and will last the longest.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Use the pack - store - wash system supplied with all Sea to Summit sleeping bags, and you will ensure maximum loft from your bag.

To help you care for your sleeping bag and store it properly, all Sea to Summit sleeping bags are supplied with three storage sacks:

  • 1 Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil® compression sack for easy packing
  • 1 Oversized mesh storage cell to ensure the down maintains optimal loft during long periods of storage
  • 1 Large cotton sack to protect your bag when laundering

Use the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil® compression sack to pack and compress your sleeping bag for an expedition. Stuff your sleeping bag in from the foot first, tighten the drawcord and gently compress the stuff sack. To ensure the best performance from your sleeping bag, do not store under compression for long periods.

The mesh storage cell has been specifically designed to store your sleeping bag in between trips. Air out your sleeping bag thoroughly before storing and do not store damp. Store in a clean dry place. This storage cell will help maintain the loft of your sleeping bag.

The cotton laundry sack has your sleeping bag washing instructions printed on it. We recommend hand washing, if you use a washing machine, use only a front loading machine. Sea to Summit recommends the use of Granger’s™ down wash or similar. Use the laundry sack to protect your sleeping bag when tumble drying. Caution: use low heat/delicates setting only.

With the correct use of these three supplied storage sacks you can expect many years of warm cosy nights in your Sea to Summit sleeping bag.

Construction

Differential Cut Shell & Lining
Down insulates best when it is uncompressed and fully lofted. To help the down loft correctly, Sea to Summit uses a differential cut shell and lining. The top shell of all Sea to Summit sleeping bags is cut larger than the lining. This creates space in between for the down to loft fully.

In addition they use 3D side walls which gives the distinctive vertical sides to their sleeping bags, this further aids vertical loft along both sides of the bag. In the bottom of the bag, they use a reverse differential cut. By increasing the size of the lining relative to the shell, down lofts up to fill the voids around your body, torso, legs and the small of your back. Trapping heat close to the skin is essential for efficient warm sleeping.

Offset Baffles
Offset baffle construction provides a stable structure that allows the down to loft to the correct density and minimises loss of heat through seams. This improves thermal efficiency of the sleeping bag without adding unnecessary weight of complicated baffle construction.

Side Block Baffle & Fill Ratio
The loft is optimised using a side block baffle construction which allows the bags to be filled with a different ratio of down in the top and bottom. Sea to Summit sleeping bags have more down in the top of the bag where it is most effective as the down isn’t compressed by your body weight. The exact ratio of down fill must be matched to the shape of a sleeping bag.

The Micro bags’ slim fit forms a tight cocoon around the body, when you toss and turn at night, the bag rotates with you. For this style of bag it is best to use a 55/45 (top/bottom) fill ratio. In the Trek, Traverse and Alpine bags a 60/40 fill ratio is more suitable. These bags are a generous cut and have room inside to rotate without the bag following.

Q. What is the EN13537 Temperature Rating System?

A. This is the European standard for sleeping bag temperature ratings. Everyone sleeps differently; some people are very warm sleepers while others feel cold easily.

There are many factors that affect your warmth and comfort in a sleeping bag. An important factor is that you use a good insulating mat, so your body heat isn't drawn into the cold ground you are sleeping on. Other factors include your tent or shelter, gender and metabolism, clothing, sleeping bag liner, use of the hood and your daily calorie intake.

Although the EN13527 standard does not identify a single precise temperature a tested sleeping bag is suitable for, it does provide an industry standardised temperature range that a typical user can refer to as a guide for the conditions their bag will be most comfortable in.

The EN13537 standard provides three temperature levels to guide a consumer in their choice:

  • Comfort: The temperature at which a standard woman can expect to sleep comfortably in a relaxed position. If you consider yourself a cold sleeper use this rating to decide the coldest temperature the sleeping bag is suitable for.
  • Lower Limit: The temperature at which a standard man can sleep for eight hours in a curled position without waking. If you consider yourself a warm sleeper use this rating to decide the coldest temperature the sleeping bag is suitable for.
  • Extreme: This is a survival only rating for a standard woman. Between the lower limit and the extreme rating a strong sensation of cold has to be expected and there is a risk of health damage due to hypothermia. This is an extreme survival rating only, we do not recommend you rely on this rating for general use.

Q. What colours do the sleeping bags come in?

A. The sleeping bags only come in one colour option for each series. The Traverse XtI and XtII are green with a black lining. The Micro McII and McIII are silver grey with a black lining. The Trek TkI, TkII and TkII are charcoal with an orange lining. The Alpine ApII and ApIII are red with a black lining.

A. Most sleeping bags are offered in 3 sizes.

  • Short: for people up to 170 cm / 5\'7

Q. What is the warranty on the bag?

A. Sea to Summit offers a lifetime guarantee on all products against manufacturing and material defects. This warranty does not cover wear and tear. Should a fault develop in your product due to manufacturing or a material defect, we will repair or replace it at our discretion. This warranty is offered to the original owner of the sleeping bag if proof of purchase can be provided.

Q. How do I look after my bag when it is not in use?

A. The best way to look after your sleeping bag is to air it out thoroughly after use, then store your sleeping bag in the mesh storage cell provided. Store in a clean dry place. Never store your sleeping bag if wet or damp. If you think your sleeping bag is damp air it out for as long as it takes to dry or tumble dry the sleeping bag in the cotton sack on a low heat or delicates setting.

Q. Where are the sleeping bags made?

A. Sea to Summit source their sleeping bag components from locations all around the world including Eastern Europe, Asia and the USA. The manufacturing operations are in China as the existing infrastructure allows us to best manage quality.

Q. Are you intending to make a women's bag?

A. No, but in both the Traverse and Trek series bags offer a short bag which is ideal for women if you are under 170 cm (5\'7) in height.

Q. It seems that Sea to Summit has created some very nice sleeping bags, what is their policy in animal welfare?

A. Sea to Summit firmly believes in the humane treatment of animals regardless of circumstance. They do not use any down that has been 'live plucked'. All down supplied by their vendors are from ducks and geese that are harvested for the meat industry, therefore the down and feathers are collected as a by-product. The down is collected after the birds have been processed and are no longer alive.

Sea to Summit routinely ensures their vendors operate in strict adherence to their own animal welfare policies, furthermore their down shipments are batch certified to guarantee that the down is harvested by appropriate means throughout the supply chain.

Q. My partner and I prefer to zip our sleeping bags together. I am 6\'3 and she is 5\'9. If we got two bags, a long and a regular, with opposing zippers, would the zippers be the same length and could they zip together properly?

A. The Alpine, Traverse and Trek bags are fitted with a fixed zip length for all sizes. These bags can be zippered together in any combination of model and size. The Micro series can be zipped together with other Micro's.

The down in Sea to Summit sleeping bags is a by-product of the duck and goose meat industry. Like most natural products, down quality depends on many variables; predominantly the species, the feather content and the age. The best quality down is sourced from older birds, consisting of large plumes and clusters that create hundreds of thousands of tiny pockets, trapping body heat to provide unmatched insulation.

Not only does down have the best warmth to weight ratio, it is also the most durable sleeping bag insulation. If kept dry and occasionally washed using the recommended method, it will last a lifetime.
